Busy busy busy

No, the lair has not shutdown. It is a lot of work putting together physical fitness regiments and ensuring that all parts of the machine that are the lair are working smoothly.  More to come, more often.

Taking Care Of Number One

By Serpentor ~ October 14th, 2009. Filed under: General Information.

As I walk around the Lair and oversee some of the training the recruits are participating in, it reminds me how much I enjoy participating in physical training.  A solid mental and physical foundation are the keys to building a productive trooper.  The same goes for leaders.  I pride myself on taking care of myself from the inside out and from top to bottom.  I expect every one of my troops to do the same.

Trickout Your Haiku CD

Haiku Alpha 1 lightscribe CD label

With the release of the Haiku alpha my cyber-vipers are burning copies left and right but none of the CDs are getting labeled.  That drives me crazy! I put one of my more artistically inclined vipers to work on creating a lightscribe version of a label. Now we can put some of these stacks of lightscribe CDs we have laying around to good use. Here are the fruits of her labors.  It is pretty much a lightscribe version of the nice color label the Haiku Team has available here. You are free to use this version as you like. You should also consider purchasing a nice color one to help out the Haiku Project.

One Step Closer

Hot off the presses is the Alpha release of Haiku. This is excellent news and after downloading and burning an ISO, we were able to get Haiku running off the live CD on most of the machines in the Lair. Go grab your copy of the ISO from here. This will give my cyber-vipers a little something to do instead of reverse engineering malware.

The Heavier Side Of GI Joe

By Serpentor ~ August 21st, 2009. Filed under: Reviews.

Last year at the San Diego Comic Convention they showed a preview of GI Joe: Resolute, a new PG-13, anime style version of the GI Joe cartoon.  Here is a link to the phone-cam version of the preview and I LOVE the audience reaction when Snake-Eyes finishes off the Cobra Trooper with his sword. They produced the cartoon in ten 5 minute long segments and a 10 minute long finale and showed it on the web. Later, they put it all together into a single hour long movie and showed it on Cartoon Network this past April. They may still be replaying it during Adult Swim on CN, check your local listings. I grabbed the whole movie from a bit torrent and watched it on the HDTV in the Lair. The animation itself is pretty nice and easy on the eyes.  It reminds me of Ghost in the Machine. The story was penned by a British writer who didn’t even know who or what GI Joe was. Characters die, there is blood, GI Joe gets caught with their pants down a couple of times and Cobra Commander isn’t a bumbling idiot. I enjoyed the movie but still felt kind of empty when it was done. Why does everyone insist on killing Storm Shadow?  He is a cool character though he may have a couple of character flaws, who doesn’t? There were many other things that just rubbed me the wrong way that I may discuss later. Apparently, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. More on this to come!

The Lighter Side of GI Joe

Funny or Die has put together a little homage to GI Joe and did a fantastic job.

The Ballad of G.I. Joe from Olivia Wilde

Only a true GI Joe fan could nail all of these classic costumes and the cameo at the end is just too much!

The GI Joe Movie

By Serpentor ~ August 8th, 2009. Filed under: Reviews.

Being a huge fan of the GI Joe franchise for years and years, I always imagined someone taking the time to put together a solid movie that would have millions and millions of people enjoy the franchise as much as I do. The Transformers movie actually did this for me.  I liked the Transformers but wasn’t a big fanboy until after watching the first movie. Unfortunately, the GI Joe movie falls way short.  Yes, it is an action movie that grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go until the last frame but it doesn’t really do a whole lot for the viewers except assaulting them with fast action scenes and over the top CGI.  The franchise has been abused and as much as I would like a second, better movie, I don’t think it is going to happen.  Hey’s hoping that GI Hoe: Resolute can breath some life into the franchise instead.

The Movie Is Out

By Serpentor ~ August 7th, 2009. Filed under: Reviews.

So, the live action GI Joe movie is out in theaters today in the US.  Paramount didn’t let critics review the movie before today because they wanted to give it a chance and not have to deal with damage control the same way they had to with the Transformers 2 movie a month ago. Maybe that was a smart move on their part. Initial reports say it is a fun action movie with a lot of explosions.  I have a previous engagement this evening so I will not get a chance to see the movie until tomorrow morning.  I am not sure what to expect, they have replaced my good friend Cobra Commander’s hood with a fish bowl.

Crunchin’ For The Cause

By Serpentor ~ June 4th, 2009. Filed under: Distributed Computing.

The incredible Urias McCollough from Team Haiku has ported the Seventeen or Bust client to Haiku.  This port now gives us a chance to get the Haiku name out a bit more.  Though Haiku is not even to an alpha stage, it is up and running on a machine and crunching numbers in the name of science from my lair.  You can see my SoB results here.  Setup a Haiku machine and grab the client to help crunch for Haiku.  You are more than welcome to put Serpentor as your userID :-)  Every little bit helps.  For the cause!
